Can cats eat macadamia nuts? Maybe you have this thought if your cat tries to sneak a bite while you’re adding macadamia nuts to some baked treats for a special holiday occasion. If humans can eat macadamia nuts, can cats safely eat them too?

The short answer is no, cats can’t safely eat macadamia nuts. While macadamia nuts aren’t quite as toxic to cats as they are to dogs, they’re still a food that you should definitely avoid feeding to your cat.

Here’s what you need to know about macadamia nuts and cats.

Why Are Macadamia Nuts Bad For Cats?

We know that macadamia nuts are exceptionally bad for dogs, and in some severe cases, a dog might shake, run a fever, and struggle to walk after eating macadamia nuts. But we don’t yet know the exact science behind this.

The situation is similar for cats and macadamia nuts. We know that macadamia nuts can bring on illness in cats, but studies have not yet definitively worked out why that is.

In general, because nuts contain high amounts of oil and fat, they can often result in a bout of diarrhea or vomiting if a kitty eats them. In some cases, nuts can also become a choking hazard for cats, especially nuts the size of macadamias.

If you notice that your cat has somehow managed to scarf down some macadamia nuts, it’s important to closely monitor the situation and look out for any symptoms.

Some of the most common symptoms include diarrhea, vomiting, and acting lethargic. In some cases, macadamia nuts can also have a negative affect on a cat’s digestive system.

If you notice your cat displaying these symptoms, make sure to call your veterinarian as soon as you can. Another option is to make use of the ASPCA’s 24-hour Animal Poison Control Center helpline, which you can call at 888-426-4435.

In all cases, follow the advice of your vet closely.
